Schedules are up!

I know for sure that Ill be taking 7.31 (Current Topics in Mammalian Biology), a seminar-style upper division biology elective which gets great reviews in the student subject evaluations. Ill also be taking 5.60 (Thermodynamics and Kinetics), because its a requirement for biology majors to graduate, and Im a senior this year, and we can all connect the dots on what that means. (Im not looking forward to it. Multivariable calc is a prereq. Eep.) I also have to take 21A.100 (Intro to Anthropology) Im concentrating in anthropology, and 21A.100 is required to concentrate (and lets all connect the dots again about taking required classes in ones senior year). Finally, Im taking 9.15 (Biochemistry and Pharmacology of Synaptic Transmission), which I am super-psyched about. My quandary currently is with my fifth class. I need to take another anthropology course to finish the concentration. Prior to today, I was planning to take 21A.245 (Power). It sounded interesting, and it fit in a really nice place in my schedule. (Dont underestimate schedule as a major factor in my choice of HASSes. HASS classes, as far as I am concerned, are a necessary evil. I am well-rounded only under duress.) But since schedules came out, I could access the class website, and I did not like what I read. There seems to be a lot of writing, plus several required out-of-class exercises in my experience, when professors are that demanding on the syllabus, it doesnt bode well for the workload. So Im thinking of taking 21A.260 (Culture, Embodiment, and the Senses). I took a class with the professor last term, and I really liked her. The only negatives are that shes a fairly tough grader (and she knows how I write, so I wont get the obligatory first paper boost for being able to string a few sentences together) and that my schedule is positively ugly if I take her class. The homeless need shelters but it is not always easy to get in. The government makes it hard for them to find places to live because they want them to show a stable working job and or know that they are only homeless because they are special and no one wanted them. Due to the hardships of shelters, it leaves many on the streets in the dangers of the world. This was passed so that the kids may continue to go to school to get an education and be able to possible go to college that way they could get a degree and hopefully make money to later on in life afford a house and no longer be homeless. The government wants kids to get and education no matter how you live or what you do because they wan t all people to be successful in life. Many acts have been passed within the years to help the homeless out as much as possible. They may not be the best but it is a start. Many people think that they do nothing for them but that is because they do it all behind the scenes. Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) are a leading cause of death and disability among children and adolescents, with an annual incidence estimated at 180 cases per 100,000 children between the ages of 1 and 15 in the United States (Yeates,2005). Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) are defined in the special education law in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA 1990) as being an â€Å"injury to the brain caused by an external physical force, resulting in total or partial functional disability or psychosocial impairment† that affects a child’s educational performance (Cave,2004). Knowing that, students learning needs are different from students with other exceptionalities (Spear,2005). Physical effects With regard to physical deficits, individuals with TBI may have an array of problems ranging from sensory deficits to difficulty with mobility. Headaches and fatigue are common, especially during the early stages of recovery (Bullock,2005). Their muscles may be â€Å"weak, hypotonic, or spastic,† which could interfere with learning activities such as writing and keyboarding. They may also experience seizures. In general, schools are more proficient at making physical accommodations for students. Cognitive Effects Cognitive difficulties are common following a brain injury and some may seem quite baffling to educators unfamiliar with TBI (New York State Education Dept. ,1997). For example, children with TBI may have short-term memory problems, yet, may be able to easily recall information learned prior to their injury. This has significant implications for assessment purposes. Furthermore, it is possible for a student to perform well on â€Å"some widely used standard assessments† using his or her prior knowledge. Such a â€Å"false indication† of the student’s current level of functioning may prevent the individual from receiving the proper services. To avoid this drawback, several different methods of assessment should be used when attempting to determine the needs of a student recovering from TBI. Memory is only one aspect of cognition that is affected by TBI. It also commonly affects a student’s ability to attend to â€Å"instruction, mental processing speed, and thought formulation and reasoning†. These are only a few of the hardships faced by students who are affected by TBI and educators must be aware of these problems. Psychosocial Effects Difficulties that result from changes in the student’s social, emotional, and behavioral functioning are known as psychosocial effects (Bullock,2005). The changes in the brain resulting from the injury, along with stress and anxiety brought on by rehabilitation and recovery, may cause children with TBI to exhibit unusual emotional states, such as dramatic mood swings. This emotional state can bring negative reactions from peers and teachers and makes it difficult to maintain positive relationships. When children with TBI return to school, their educational and emotional needs are often very different than before the injury. Remembering how they were prior to the brain injury may make injured students feel â€Å"embarrassed, ashamed, or frustrated† about their change in performance in the classroom (Bullock,2005). Of the various types of difficulties resulting from brain injury, the psychosocial effects have proven to be the most challenging for school personnel and parents to manage. Resources and Services Available The effects of a brain injury include a wide range of services and accommodations that may be needed. Highly individualized planning is also required (Zabel, 2005). Many students with mild to moderate TBI’s usually return to regular general education classes with some adaptations and modifications. Students with TBI who attend mainstream classes may also receive accommodations or related services under the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Section 504. Section 504 covers â€Å"all students who have a physical or mental impairment that substantially limit one or more major life activities, including learning† (Zabel, 2005). Students with more significant impairments should be referred to special education evaluation to determine if specialized services are necessary to address any cognitive, communication, physical, or social limitations. What Educational Interventions Are Successful? Students who have a difficult time concentrating or completing tasks need strategies. Teachers should present information to these students based on their strengths. These students have to choose a way to strengthen their learning skills by practicing modalities such as learning visually, kinesthetically, or auditorily. It is important that teachers include prioritizing, structuring, and slowing down while instructing a lesson. This can simply mean talking slower, giving less information at a time, and answering questions more thoroughly(Cave,2004). ClassroomAccommodations Altering the classroom environment is essential when trying to meet the needs of a student with a TBI (Bowen, 2005). As an educator, you may want to provide external devices and cues, which the student can use to compensate for organization, memory, and motor deficits. Assistive devices can include technical equipment and materials such as â€Å"tape recorders, calculators, electronic spellers, computers or word processors, augmentative communication devices, timers,or equipment for mobility (e. g. , wheelchair or electric scooter)†. Other external cues used to remind students include â€Å"labels, maps, checklists, pictures or icons, photograph cues, post-it-notes, calendars, planners, and journals† (Bowen, 2005). Modifications to existing materials can assist students with TBI to learn and function in the classroom setting. Typical adjustments that allow students to participate at their grade level include providing â€Å"large print books, books on tape, and graphic organizers†. A similar approach involves â€Å"altering the expectations for student participation. † For example, teachers may choose to allow more time on tests, reduce the amount of written work required, provide exams in multiple choice format, or give pass/fail grades rather than letter grades. Researchers have found that modifying the educational environment and increasing the amount of structure and predictability in the child’s school day facilitates learning† (Keyser-Marcus, 2002). We must consider each child’s individual difficulties and circumstances when determining appropriate modifications. Therefore, we must assess the influence of the environment on the student’s ability to focus and learn; and we need to explore a variety of modifications before we modify the educational surroundings. Due to the fact that many students with TBI experience difficulty with fatigue, a modified school day may be necessary for better performance. Scheduled breaks or a shortened school day may limit fatigue. Another strategy would be to schedule difficult subjects early because the student’s alertness level is higher. In addition to modifications to the school day, researchers have found â€Å"that altering the student’s workload, extending deadlines, and breaking tasks into smaller components have all improved academic performance†. TBI Organizations The Brain Injury Association helps promote â€Å"awareness, understanding, and prevention of brain injury through education, advocacy, and community support services† (Monfore, 2005). Its web site has links to support groups and has a wealth of information on various aspects of brain injury. The Brain Injury Society is a non profit organization that works with clients, families, and caregivers to identify strategies and techniques to â€Å"maximize newfound potential for a stronger recovery† from brain injury. This organization sponsors events, as well as provides general information on TBI, a newsletter, links to other relevant sites, and important contact information â€Å"for government officials in a position to affect legislation†. Discuss the impact of this behaviour in any industry using different oligopoly theories. In this essay I will address the subject of price war in industrialised countries. From different angles I will to try to break down and analyse the idea that price war in industrialised countries is a fact of life. The basic and underlying concept of a price war is that two or more firms in an industry lower or change their own prices with the knowledge that in an oligopolistic environment the other firms in that industry will lower theirs too so they match up. This is due to the interdependency in their interaction with all the firms in that industry. Price fixing plays a major role in a price war. My method of assessing whether said statement is true or false is to weigh up the pros and cons. From there I can make an informed decision and will be able to explain it through outlined discussions and ideas, and by visual aids if necessary. By the end of my essay I will be able, also, to discuss, with help of oligopolistic theories, the effect that a price war has on any industry. A price war is the concept that refers to economic activity of high competitive rivalry between a few firms in a particular industry, with complex rounds of price reductions. If one firm reduces their prices or a single price of a good, then the other firms in that industry will do the same to match that price. In an industry, in which a state of oligopoly is apparent (i.e. only a few sellers operate), each firm is quite capable of producing enough of the industry total output, resulting in their ability to affect the market price. A real world example of this is in the coffee industry where there are three major producers; Starbucks, Cafe Nero and Costas Coffee. These three large providers of coffee produce such large percentages each of the coffee industry that if, say, Starbucks were to increase their supply, the price of an average coffee would decrease considerably. An increase in output for one of the coffee providers will result in the price to decrease for the other firms in the industry. To explain further, if Starbucks produces double its output, the price of coffee from Starbucks drops hugely. However, most people are not wholly loyal to a particular brand, so Costas Coffee and Cafe Nero drinkers will switch to the cheaper Starbucks. As a result, the price of Costas Coffee and Cafe Nero coffee drops too. Such strategic situations can involve competition or collusion. Collusion= all firms in an industry agree to cut back on production by a certain amount to increase both prices and profits. The outcomes of both collusion and competition can be massively different for consumers and producers. For example, collusion benefits producers most due to the fact that as long as they keep colluding, their profits will continue to increase. However, collusion has a negative effect on consumers because it results in higher prices and decreased output. Collusion, unfortunately, is uncommon and many industries are dominated by heavily competing firms. If such collusion actually happened then government intervention may be necessary to protect consumers. All these ideas of collusion and competition between firms in an industry are the major foundations and components of a price war. In the short term, consumers benefit very well from such activities, due to the chance of benefiting from lower prices. Also in the short run a negative impact can hit producers by the result of lower prices leading to reduced profit margins. In the long term, the major firms in any particular industry can gain from a price war with increased profits etc. Price wars do seem to happen in every industry in some shape or form. There is a fair amount of reason why that is. To start with there are competitors whom might wish to concentrate on a particular product and through this product try to gain market share by producing its alternate good at decreased prices. There is also penetration pricing where firms may offer/provide lower prices of new brands of a good or product into an already highly established market. Process optimization is also a cause in that firms may choose to reduce prices rather than output with the plan regulate and sustain the economy of scale. A big cause for price wars is predatory pricing (albeit illegal). This refers to when a firm may set the price extremely low, even too low, on a good, in order to ddestroy other firms completely in that industry. Finally and in some ways most importantly, especially in context with this essay title, is the cause oligopoly. Oligopoly is where all economic actions on prices and outputs for each firm in an industry are interdependent. Reactions to price changes and ultimately price wars can vary. The primary reaction to a price war price change or price reduction is consideration and caution. If its short term, a firms reaction should normally be ignoring the change. Otherwise, short-term changes can be interpreted as cataclysmic changes and lead to big price wars. Or the most common highly anticipated reaction is reduce the price and keep in line with ones competitors. Now its quite easy to see why a price might be good and benefit certain people. We can see that producers and consumers can benefit from them in some way and at some point. But in the end there is also a negative impact of price wars. As previously stated two or more firms compete in an industry and in turn both reduce their prices. We see that one can benefit whether you are a producer or consumer due to lower prices but this is not always the case. When these firms compete and initiate a price war, it is normally understood that both firms lower value along with price. Ultimately the firms lose profit and the consumer loses value. In my conclusion, I believe that price wars in the short-run can improve profits and can allow consumers a small space of time to take advantage of lowered prices. But in the end they cause more trouble than they are worth. However they also seem unavoidable as nearly every single industry in an economy has an event of a price war at some point. In the supermarket industry, Sainsbury and Tesco compete in a price war. O2 and T-mobile do the same in the mobile industry. Starbucks and Cafe Nero show signs too. The list of price wars in different industries is long but clearly outlines that the statement the concept of a price war is a fact of life in industrialised countries is pretty much correct.

After researching the incidents of inequality, please answer the following questions for each scenario Essay

Scenario #1: __Marriage Inequality Same-Sex Relationships___ discrimination. 1) Summarize the incident. As more states are recognizing marriage for same sex couples, there is still conflict surround the same-sex unions about marriage equality and religious liberty. Marriage is a of sexual orientation identity enactment, and religious objections arise largely in response to such relationships. This article is on sexual orientation equality, it argues for antidiscrimination regime that will protect same-sex relationships. In this article it also states that same-sex relationships are an expression of identity and religious objections are relating to that identity. There is discrimination against same-sex relationships. Religious organizations as well as employers, property owners, small business and others to discriminate against same-sex couples in situations that are removed from marriage itself that would threaten this antidiscrimination law. They are using a term â€Å"marriage conscience protection† to label instances of discrimination against same sex relationships (Nejaime, (2012). 2) How might this situation affect the victim? Being a victim of any type of discrimination can be emotionally and psychologically painful. It can cause distress, depression, feelings of anxiety which can linger on with them for years. It can affect the psychological and emotional well-being of member of the LBGT community. Those same psychological outcomes can create individuals who are more accepting to their sexuality. 3) How might it affect the offending person or institution? First off it is a human rights violation. There are array of new laws that have been adopted which includes laws banning discrimination against LGBT, penalizing homophobic hate crimes, granting recognition of same-sex relationship (ACLU, (n.d.)). Establishments that chose to discriminate are in violation of some laws. LBGT community can get people to rally with th em and protest against an institution. That will cause for news coverage and possible shut down of business or cause for lawsuit against an institution. 4) How do situations like this affect society as a whole? Situations when dealing with LGBT there can be rejection. Discrimination impacts society as a whole because it is reinforcing prejudice. Many people just fear what may be strange or unknown to them, and their reactions vary with suspicion, violence towards those whoms appearance, behavior or culture is different. Scenario # 2: _Racial harrashment in the military__ discrimination. 1) Summarize the incident. This reading is in regards to the racial discrimination or a bias against black drivers that the CPD uses that as a decision to stop a vehicle. Where the term used by minorities is DWB (driving while black came from. In Cincinnati there is a study that showed that DST (daylight savings time) black drivers were less likely to be stopped. When the shift from daylight to darkness came the racial discrimination of black drivers being stopped. Black drivers were also were less likely to receive a citation than nonblack drivers. Blacks also had longer stops and higher search rates than white drivers.(Ridgeway, 2009) 2) How might this situation affect the victim? I think that for black males even with valid drivers license and no drug paraphernalia this could be a tramatizing event. Making one not to want to driver in Cincinnati after dark because of the fact that they would most likely to be stopped because of the color of their skin. Even the fact that blacks are more sterotyped to be criminals so that is profiling itself that they are up to no good. It has caused troubled community relations. Are not willing to trust the police. 3) How might it affect the offending person or institution? The Cincinnati police department went the scrutiny. To where the department went through training and discipline of officers and still working on troubled community relations. The U.S department of Justice Civil Rights Division of Investigation came in to work with the Cincinnati Police Department to improve the area of law enforcement. The CPD also had internal investigations being carried out. The are making efforts to investigate and eradicate failed because of unclear findings.(Cincinnati Public Library, (n.d.)). 4) How do situations like this affect society as a whole? This affects the community in a whole because with that racial profiling and injustice that went on there where the distrust went so far the opfficers and blacks were being shot at. Racial profiling affects civil rights, and has affect on all people of color. It victimizes the people that they are supposed to be protecting.
